Hello DearI would highly sueggst the Melia Cayo cocoWe've just returned from 2 weeks at the Melia having had a great holiday..The hotel is 10 minutes from the airport (but don't worry about hearing plane noise because there just wasn't any). Check in is very quick and your bags are brought round by the bell boy later on. The hotel is pretty big, but it is a bit tired looking and in need of a caring touch. They obviously know this as brand new furniture arrived in the lobby bar at the end of our first week which smartened it up a lot. They are also refurbishing the main buffet restaurant and extending the lobby. The rooms can best be described as adequate. They are comfortable enough and the maid service is very good, but they are certainly not 5 star luxury.Food not really sure what to say about this The buffet restaurant is out of action and their plan B (the beach restaurant) was damaged in the hurricane and they are very slowly repairing the roof. As a result the buffet is served in the pool bar and the number of times you can use the a la carte is unrestricted. We therefore ate in the buffet twice food again is adequate but nothing special. The Italian is nice. good service and food is good (steer clear of the lasagne and the cannelloni and you'll be fine). The International on the lagoon is their attempt at fine dining but falls very short of the mark. Having said that the food is absolutely fine, just not the high standard that they are aiming for. I also get a dodgy stomach on holiday but wasn't ill once at this hotel which really says all you need to know. There is nothing wrong with the food, but it won't blow your mind. One word of warning take lots of mosquitoe repellant. I have never known anywhere like it for mosquitoes. They spray the whole hotel morning and night but it really is dreadful. My advice is not to go out for dinner in the evening until at least 30mins after they've sprayed otherwise you really will be eaten alive. It's very unpleasant!!While out and about on various trips I got a sneaky peak at the other hotels in the area and i can confidently say that ours is the best on Cayo Coco. It's worth mentioning that you also get the use of the Sol hotel which is next door. I know a few people who weren't happy with the eating arrangements used their buffet instead and i heard good reports. The beach is the star of the show in this hotel. It really is beautiful and the sea is very safe to swim in. There's a little bar (included in AI) and lougers etc. Theree is a dive school but its not PADI or BSAC so my partner decided not to do any courses with them as they wouldn't be recognised anywhere else. I saw a couple of lessons in the pool and the instructer seemed very good. Apparently it was very good value but this is probably becuase they aren't registered with an internationally recognised company. I also really liked the pool at this hotel. Its not very deep, but its great for cooling off during the day and its a nice place to spend the day sunbathing. There are plenty of loungers but not really enough umbrellas and the sun really is too strong to sit out in all day unless you want to look like a lobster! We found the AI to be excellent in this hotel. Even the drinks in the mini bar (coke, sprite, beer and water) are included and are topped up every day. It's worth mentioning that the Cayos are very isolated and there is literally nothing on them apart from hotels. There are no other restaurants or shops or anything really so bear that in mind before you go because you really will be spending the majority of your time at the hotel. We did a few trips including a trip to the mainland (a must for everyone just to see the real cuban life very different to what you see on teh cayos), spa, deep sea fishing (now dubbed Sailfish Saturday by the crew after my partner caught a huge sailfish!!, catamaran and snorkelling trip, trip to deserted cayo (Cayo Mortero), horse riding on the beach at sunset and a trip to Pilar beach. I can recommend all of these trips but be careful with the horse riding. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone who hasn't ridden before, the horses respond to voice commands from the leader and you do canter or gallop down the beach. If you're not happy with this there's not a lot you can do until the leader decides its time to stop. I loved it, but those less experienced would probably have found it a bit scary!! I can also recommend the trip to Pilar beach. It costs 5 pesos each (a33) for the 50k bus ride to the beach on Cayo Guillermo and it is well worth it. It is supposed to be the most beautiful beach on the whole of the cayos and is worth a few hours of your holiday to go and see it. The bus goes every day from the hotel reception can give you the times. There is no spa at the hotel. Rather you can pay 49 pesos (around a327) and have a few hours at the spa nearby. There will probably be quite a few people that do this a

- Normal tipping is 10%- Never drink tap water, ylaaws use water from bottles.- Watch out with street or beach food, there's sometimes a poor hygiene.- The use and sale of gum, chocolate etc. is very limited in Cuba due to the embargo and the price, the majority of the Cubans can not afford it. If they may choose, they prefer meat over chocolate.- take your precautions for the Tourista disease this is diarrhea cause by food, sometimes the Salmonellae bacteria is involved. Take a small first aid kit with you, including anti-diarrhea (Imodium)Aspirin and antibiotics (diarrhea)- Never have sex without a condom, there's a lot of Aids/HIV in Cuba.- Dengue fever cause by the Aedes Mosquito is a possibility, use an insect repellent to protect you.- Hepatitis vaccinations are recommended but not required.

Once I received a call offering me a decent sum to turn for a pianist for a chamber music concert. I was pleased to finally get paid for something I'd been doing pro bono for years. I got there early and met with the pianist. He seemed high-strung but some people are before a concert. I clarified repeat issues with him and he assured me he was a clear nodder. The concert began and I soon saw why he was so high-strung; his mediocre technique and limited musicality made him a bad choice to play the well-known Beethoven and Brahms trios he was tackling (almost literally, football player style). We got towards the end of the first page and he did not nod. I figured, Maybe he likes memorize the beginning of the next page and have late turns. Nope as we reached the last two beats he abruptly turned his heard toward me and, in a low, gruff voice barked, Turn! This disagreeable ritual was repeated for most of the performance. I thought it might have been less disruptive for him and the audience to nod as he said. No such luck. I made it through and didn't mess it up, but he really unnerved me and I dare say I was very deserving of my pay that evening.

Cuba is a place that you should visit before the US lifts the embargo. Once that happens, you will see the fast food places pop up like crazy. A friend has just returned from a holiday in Cayo Coco, and said he had a great time there. I was in Varadero a year ago for my third visit, which was fantastic as usual, but will try Cayo Coco next time for a change of scenery. The Mayan Rivera is also a very nice holiday destination. We returned home on December 3rd after two wonderful weeks there. No kidnappings or murders happening. That is taking place about 1500 miles from there on the US, Mexican border. The Cancun area is a tourist mecca that can’t afford to have bad publicity. The resorts have good security, and outside the resorts is a large police, and military presents. We toured outside the resort several times, and never ran into any trouble. The mexican people are very helpful, and pleasant. We will be returning there again this year for some more sun, and fun.The food in Cuba is not always what you are used to. Going 4 – 4 and a half star is kind of iffy. The booze, and entertainment are good. The Mayan Riviera, 4 – 4 and a half star is pretty good. Usually several restaurants to choose from. Lots of entertainment day and night. If you do the all inclusive you will have all the booze and food you can consume with no extra charge. I do recommend that you check with a travel agent for the best resorts for your budget. What ever you choose, I’m sure you will enjoy.

You won’t be paying at the restaurants in Cayo Coco so it might be a little difficult to know what 10% will be (unless you’re paying for a lobster dinner and not booked as VIP). What I do is about $3-6 CUC a day for meal tipping. You can do $1-2 CUC per meal if you wish. You don’t have to tip every time you get a drink at the bar…so you could just give a few extra dollars at one time and the bartender/server will keep serving you.For the maids, about $1-2 CUC per day as well…or leave little gifts if you like (such as toiletries, etc). The hotel internet cafes charges about $6 CUC/hour usage. The ice cubes on the resort are made from bottled water and the water served in the restaurants are also bottled. Even though the water in the hotel rooms (and even throughout Cuba) are considered potable, it’s best to use bottled water. It doesn’t cost much to buy the water bottles at the hotels. You could always ask your waiter/waitress to refill your bottle when you go to the restaurant. But just keep in mind that it’s not always clean or healthy to re-use the bottle too often (and refilling too many used bottles isn’t always hygienic).I always chose to brush my teeth with the bottled water and have never gotten sick. The only time I ever felt ‘off’ to my stomach was one time EVER (and that only lasted for a couple of hours). I think it was due to something I ate that may have been cross-contaminated or maybe not cooked properly. But this happens anywhere you go in the world. Always make sure your food is well-cooked and HOT when it comes to your table…but that’s a given anywhere, everywhere. Salads are clean. But in general I always am careful when it comes to salad (whether in restaurants at home or away in another country). If you do have salad, be sure to coat it well with vinegar or lemon juice. But a lot of their salads in the restaurants consist of a variety of vegetables (avocado, onions, tomatoes, black bleans, etc…and you mix them up to make your own). They do sell snacks at the hotels in Cayo Coco….cookies, chips, gum, candy, chocolate, etc. You don’t have to bring your own if you don’t want to.Be safe and be smart as you would when at home. Most of the time when people get sick or run into problems is because they’ve ‘gone on holiday’ from their proper habits at home. Don’t drink too much alcohol especially when in the sun.Keep reapplying your sunscreen at all times…start off with a strong SPF until your skin adjusts. If you wish to lower it, you must keep reapplying more frequently.Don’t go out too far away from the shore. It doesn’t happen often, but if you get stung by a jellyfish, quickly go to the restaurant and they’ll give you vinegar to apply to the sting. It’ll heal in no time (better than cortisone).Cayo Coco is a beautiful area and you will really love it there.Email me if you wish to know more.Have a great time!(which hotel are you going to?)
